3- The SUBJANGLE SHIPPING NOTIFICATION of points 2 (above) and point 6 (below) override all Bandcamp system generated notifications.

Cascading arpeggios and gently enveloping keys lie at the heart of Leicester based artist Neil Hill’s stirring DIY jangle project Shopfires. Out now via Subjangle, Shopfires’ self-titled debut album is a warmly comforting collection of beautifully crafted bedroom pop infused with the spirit of C86 and early Flying Nun. Softly sung melodies and searching lyrics are frequently given flight by Hill’s expansive arrangements, gifting the project scope far beyond its lo-fi origins.

Shopfires is the solo recording project of British singer-songwriter Neil Hill, his self-titled debut album is DIY bedroom pop at its charming best. We get eight lo-fi indie pop tunes – warm and melancholic, but above all atmospheric – with a few spoken soundscapes that enhance a cinematic feel. Unignorable sounds colour outside the lines in the background, but it’s the jangly guitar melodies and hazy vocals in the foreground that settle between your ears. The ideal soundtrack to the tasteful lyrics: “Take these summer bruises // Inexcusable excuses // I’ve never really found a way // To make it through another day // Without you, without you.”

Really enjoying how familiar and new this sounds. Songs that could be from the glory age of intelligent 80s indie pop played through an exquisite gauze of rippling acoustic guitars. Really lovely!
Aide Memoire maybe my favourite song so far this year. The way it builds and spreads and shines, travels so purely on its melodic path - it's brought me lots of pleasure in 2024 to date.
