It would be a tad misguided to state that Leicester’s Shopfires have burst onto the scene with this debut Summer Bruises single, as ‘bursting’ at least suggests a level of confidence that their Bandcamp tagline of “DIY pop recorded directly into a cheap laptop” never really manifests.

However, where the music comes from and how it is derived can be assigned to the troubles of music snobs and the rest of us can simply enjoy the sheer beauty of this release.

As such, the title track treats us to the sort of fragile, jangly indie-pop melancholy that is reminiscent of the recent The Boltons/English Summer vibe, albeit augmented with 80/90s slightly disinterested indie-pop vocals that are so pertinent in modern acts such as Honeybourne and Jonny No Cash.

The mostly instrumental This Is Not What I Had in Mind B-side is no less stunning but moves more decidedly within the sort of sophisticated jangle-gaze sound that is so very Midlake or Mr. Floyd Larry in texture. It’s a track that can easily accompany those peaceful moments where getting lost in your troubled thoughts seems like the most remote of possibilities. It is genuine headphones in the dark music.

Some people deserve to own a laptop more than others.
